Beneath the comedy Posnanski makes a serious point

However, there are many more coaches like the three mentioned above who took over a decade to win their first title. Some of those guys are basketball coaches which is different, you might say. Well how about Bobby Bowden who is neck and neck with Joe Paterno for the most winning coach in college football It took him 18 years to win his first national championship at Florida State. In the end our mothers were right when they said "good things come in time" and "Rome wasn't built in a day." To be successful in life, and in sports, you have to be patient, take your time and do things the right way, not the easy way. Notre Dame, practice what you preach! If you want your students to follow the ways of God, conduct themselves with class and character and do the right thing when times are tough, then you yourself should do the same. The corrosive effects of steroids extend beyond the physical damage they wreak on the bodies of athletes. Records are clobbered, but asterisks appear beside names. Heroes become criminals. And fans lose trust. The shameful and illegal actions of a fewIm looking (mostly) at you, baseballhave negative repercussions for the entire sport. Until recently, I associated the term performance-enhancement with the use of drugs, such as Human Growth Hormone (HGH), or other tactics, like blood doping. But an essay in the November 2, 2009 issue of Sports Illustrated introduced me to another corrosive type of performance-enhancement: instant replay. In Harassment in the Workplace, Joe Posnanski wittily defends officials, referees, and umpires. Instant replay, he argues, nullifies the purpose of officiating, thus removing the human factora necessityfrom sports. In my favorite passage, Posnanski writes: In the NFL, officials barely even count anymorecoaches have their own flags, television cameras are the final arbiters, and after overturned calls referees are forced to stand before the crowd and admit their mistakes, like guilty schoolchildren. Next, there will be a giant chalkboard on the field for them to write, I promise to watch more closely, 500 times. Beneath the comedy, Posnanski makes a serious point. Sports are metaphors for life, and life is a metaphor for the existential conflict between our human imperfections and the visceral desire to overcome them. After all, Gold Glovers make errors with the bases loaded, and LeBron James misses buzzer beaters. They lose the game, but we (ultimately) forgive them. Theyre only human, we say. I am not equating steroids with instant replay, but I am suggesting that instant replay does harm to the integrity of sports. In the end, practice is the greatest performance-enhancer, and officials, like athletes, practice to perfect their performance on the field. When technology interjects to correct the mistakes officials make, sports relinquishes its most precious quality: humanity. . With the 55-21 thumping the Stanford Cardinal put on the USC Trojans Saturday at the Coliseum, also came a number of "firsts" for the Trojans in the Pete Carroll era.Although many of these milestones, none of which was desired by any good Trojan fan, were expected long before Saturday's debacle, the loss only served to emphasize the futility that USC has offered in this trying season. So, without further delay, here are the "firsts" that the Trojans have managed to serve up in the 2009 season:For the first time in seven years, the USC Trojans will neither win nor share the PAC-10 title. This will end an NCAA record, one of two that the Trojans have acquired in their record run from 2002 to 2008.Also for the first time in seven years, the Trojans streak of finishing in the top four in the BCS officially came to an end. This too is an NCAA record and one which might stand for some time. Also, for the first time in the Pete Carroll era, the Trojans lost in November. This record also included the 2001 season when the Trojans only managed a 6-6 record but still had an unblemishedNovember record. Finally, the Trojans managed, not only for the first time but also the second, to lose a game by more than the 11 points which represented their worst loss in Carroll's tenure. These "firsts" were bound to happen some time and the Trojan faithful can still take heart in the fact that other good teams have suffered the same slings and arrows of fate that the Trojans face this year.Following the 2006 Florida Gators championship run, they went 9-4 in Tim Tebow's first year at the helm after taking over for Chris Leak.As has been described by this author and others, this year's team was thought to have limitations going into the season.A very young defense and a turnover of special teams players made the 2009 season tenuous going in.Although the offense will graduate most of the line, which has been a disappointment anyway, the Trojans look to be in pretty good shape for the 2010 season. So as the Trojans suffer through a series of firsts in the 2009 season, Trojan faithful can look forward to better times ahead.Perhaps the 2010 season will the first in a new set of records. And more importantly, these records will be of the sort that the Trojans will desire.. New Solutions from Broadcom Drive Bluetooth(R) Integration in Notebooks,Extending Leadership in Wireless-Enabled PCsIndustry-Leading Wireless Technologies Position Broadcom for Growing Adoptionin Mobile PCsLAS VEGAS, 2009 International CES, Jan. Broadcom introduced a single-chip Bluetooth solution thatreduces PC manufacturing costs by up to 30 percent, and new IT Managersoftware that allows network administrators to control Bluetooth usage whileclosing security holes in enterprise environments.

Inaddition to web browsing and e-mail, many consumers use their PCs as thecentral storage device for digital photos, videos, music and other mediacontent. Bluetooth provides simple methods for connecting PCs with otherdevices to enjoy and share digital media, synchronize data and enhance otherPC applications while eliminating the cords that connect peripherals.According to ABI Research, Bluetooth will be built into nearly two-thirds oflaptops by 2010. As the market continues to grow, Broadcom is expanding itsposition as a leading supplier of Bluetooth for the PC industry, with keydesigns with nine of the top 10 PC OEMs.New Products to Drive Bluetooth Adoption in PCsAnnounced at this week's International Consumer Electronics Show is a newversion of the Broadcom(R) BCM2070 Bluetooth 2.1 chip with enhanced data rate(EDR) technology that provides a more cost effective way for PC manufacturersto add wireless features to their mobile PC products. Utilizing 65 nanometer(nm) process geometry, the BCM2070 Bluetooth solution is optimized to reducemanufacturing costs and board space for today's smaller PCs, enabling notebookPC module designs that are less than 6.5mm wide. The new version of the BCM2070 also offers serial flash memory, which isless expensive than parallel flash alternatives but enables enhanced firmwareupgradeability a feature that is especially important for enterprise-classnotebooks.

Using thesoftware, network administrators can implement access policies and manage theuse of Bluetooth in the enterprise environment. IT Manager enables employeesto enjoy the benefits of Bluetooth to use wireless mice and keyboards, synchronize data between their PC and other devices, and stream multimediacontent without jeopardizing the security of a corporate network.IT Manager is a component of Broadcom's BTW Bluetooth software, which isthe most widely adopted Bluetooth software for Windows(R)-based systems, enabling the industry's widest array of available Bluetooth applications forPCs. The latest release of Broadcom Bluetooth software, BTW 6.2, was selectedas a finalist for the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) "Best of CES"award, with winners to be announced at this week's 2009 International ConsumerElectronics Show."As consumers and enterprise users alike find great value in Bluetoothcapabilities, Dell will pursue the innovations that make the technology moreappealing and useable," said Frank Hanzlik, Director, Wireless ConnectivityGroup of Dell. "Broadcom's IT Manager uniquely gives IT organizations thecontrol to remotely manage security properties and the types of devices thatcan be used with Bluetooth."Broadcom's highly integrated silicon and industry leading software enablemore wireless features in new device categories (such as netbooks and UMPCs),where size, power consumption and network manageability are even more criticalthan in larger systems. Analysts predict that annual shipments of netbooks andultra mobile PCs will reach 35 million units by 2011 - all of which will offerboth Wi-Fi(R) and Bluetooth capabilities(i)."Asus strives to deliver a satisfying wireless user experience for ournetbook/notebook computer customers, seeking best-in-class solutions tofulfill our exacting requirements," said S.Y.
